I remember clearly how the conversation started, “But where will we go live after court?” Our children had lived with my husband and I for six months before their adoption was finalized. That was the standard amount of time prior to finalizing an adoption in Oklahoma. We let them know from day 1 that they were ours, we were family, their new last name was Wilsie. We even had their new last names on the stickers they wore at church, identifying them as ours, from the very beginning. But finally, after six months we were going to court to legally change their last name to match ours. So we wanted to explain this to them to prep them for the day.

Being Born Female
Being born female--that is the #1 risk factor for breast cancer. I was first touched by breast cancer as a young teenager when a grandmother I dearly loved was diagnosed and had one of her breasts removed. Since then, I’ve had maternal and paternal aunts that have had full mastectomies, my second grandmother was diagnosed, and my mother had countless cysts aspirated and removed.
When the Floor is Lava: Choosing Your Battles with Your Kids
Me: Umm… your shoes are on the wrong feet.
Son: I know! It makes Petey laugh!
Me: Isn’t it uncomfortable?
Son: Nope!
Me: Well, go ahead and get in the car I guess.
Petey, in case you are wondering, is his favorite stuffed animal. I am fairly certain Petey cannot laugh, but I guess stranger things have happened.

Don’t get me wrong, there are many fun things about having teens in the house - especially during the quarantine when we played games, worked puzzles and watched movies - and they can fix their own meals. But looking back, I feel nostalgia and love for that young mom in the trenches, falling into bed each night, having expended every ounce of physical and mental energy she had.

Daddy Issues
Not everyone gets the opportunity to see a picture of an earthly father who is loving and just. My family knows this well. I think I was about seven years old when my family went to Turner Falls for a fun day. We were walking along in some shallow water when my sister, who would've been about four years old at the time, stepped into a deep part and went right under water….
Mom Guilt
Mom guilt. Bleh. Just bleh. Its “solutions” have been summarized in memes traveling the globe. Drown it in wine and chocolate. Bury it with more Netflix. Joke about it in your own funny video. While these clever quips offer us some empathy, knowing that we’re not the only mom experiencing a hurdle doesn’t feel like enough to ease our pain.
