This Christmas at Council Road, we are singing a new original song to go along with our Advent season. The song, “What Christ Brings” was written to encourage our church and remind us of the beautiful blessings that Christ brings to us as we celebrate this special season. It is always such a gift to hear the songs that my husband, Eric Wall, dreams up for our church and this one is definitely no exception.
For now, I want to focus on the chorus of this song and dive deeper into each of these things that Christ brings.
Staring out, we sing that Christ brings HOPE!
“Christ brings hope to the hopeless”
Hope has commonly been defined as a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. We know that because of Jesus, we have the eternal hope of heaven and eternity with Him. Because Christ came to earth, died and rose again, we are able to live our lives with a hope beyond this world. Praise God for that!
“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade. This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.”
1 Peter 1:3-5
Christ brings PEACE!
“Christ brings peace to the restless”
We see this promise of peace so clearly in God’s word. Two of the scriptures that come to mind are John 16:33 and Matthew 11:28. May Jesus be our place of rest and peace as we remember that He has overcome the world!
“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest”
Matthew 11:28
Christ brings JOY!
“Christ brings joy to the heart that is suffering”
As we just read in the above scripture, we are promised by Jesus Himself that we will face trials in this world. Suffering is unavoidable, but because of the hope we have in Jesus, we can rejoice in our sufferings knowing that they will result in praise, glory, and honor when He returns!
“In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”
1 Peter 1:6-7
Christ brings TRUTH and GRACE!
“Christ brings truth in authority, He rains grace and mercy”
The perfect balance of authority and grace that Christ upholds will forever leave me in awe. The following scriptures are great reminders that Christ brings us both.
“Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.’”
John 14:6
“Surely your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”
Psalm 23:6
Finally, Christ brings LOVE!
“Christ brings a love that still pursues us in our wandering”
Jesus came into this world, lived a perfect life and died a death on a cross that we, as sinful humans, deserve. This is the greatest evidence of His unconditional love. There is no one too far gone for Jesus. His love has pursued us and will continue to pursue us all of our days.
“Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them. Doesn’t he leave the ninety-nine in the open country and go after the lost sheep until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”
Luke 15:4-7
As we celebrate God sending Jesus into the world all those years ago, may we not forget to see, What Christ Brings.
