New Year Traditions

Even if staying up until midnight isn’t your cup of tea, it seems that recently especially, ushering in a new year has been therapeutic for many. No, our lives don’t magically change when the calendars do, but there is something cathartic about a fresh start. Some people have wonderful things to look forward to in 2022 like growing their family, starting a new job, finishing school, etc., while others just wish to end 2021 because it was hard. Either way, if you’re looking to have a fresh start in 2022, Here are some ideas on how to usher in a new year.

Set goals

Yes, the stereotypical answer. Each year I set goals for myself in multiple categories--physical, financial, spiritual, emotional. When you set goals, they need to be specific. Not things like “be more fit” or “read the bible more.” Your goals should be measurable, like “lift weights 3x a week”, “read through the Old Testament”, or “only eat out 4x per month.” Once you have those goals set, write them down!!! Then place them somewhere where you will see them throughout the year.

Reflect

Even if it is painful to reflect on this past year, take some time to do it. What were your lows & highs, where did you see God work in your life, what did your community look like, what are some blessings you received, and what do you want to leave behind in 2021? You can journal your reflections, process them with another person, or just take the time to think through these questions. Reflecting helps us to process well, be grateful, and make positive changes.

Start a new tradition

This month our blog focused on the idea of traditions in the household, church, and in our cultures. Sometimes our traditions must change or be replaced by others because our lives are ever changing. What new tradition do you want to start next year? Maybe it’s writing down a blessing each day, having monthly coffee with friends, a book exchange with your fellow avid readers, a new way to do Christmas gifts, adopting a family in need each holiday season, or something else you’re inspired to do. Be intentional and start something new!

Pick a word, phrase, or verse

Remember in 2020 when our church chose Joshua 1:9 to be our verse for the year and then it ended up being the year we really needed to “be strong and courageous” and to “not be afraid or discouraged” as we all faced challenges from the pandemic? Maybe you need a word or truth to focus on this coming year--a verse, a phrase, or word that reminds you of your eternal purpose, your loving God, or your value.

Whatever you choose to do to leave this year behind and bring in a new one, may we be thankful for another year & another day to love God and love others well.
