How to Avoid Serving at Church

Pssst, over here. Hey! You there! Person who isn’t quite sure where they fit in when it comes to serving at our church, I’m talking to you! I am here to secretly fill you in on a few things behind the scenes. You see, I live with 2 of our CRBC staff members. Tough, I know. Makenzie Magnus is my sister (and landlord) and Hannah Hanzel lives in the room across from me in our upstairs “Tenet’s Quarters',' as we affectionately call it. A girl hears things and learns things living day-in and day-out with two church staff members and I’m here to spill the beans. Wondering how to get out of serving at our church? I got you.

  1. In general, don’t make eye contact with anybody on church staff. They might talk with you and find out what you are interested in, then find a way for you to plug in.

  2. Try not to smile at children. If it appears that the sight of small humans brings you joy, they will snatch you right up to help with children’s ministry.

  3. Honestly, it’s best not to discuss any kind of need you see in our community or our world. Makenzie will hear you.

  4. Think twice about using your phone during church service. Any guesses as to why? Well, that has Tech Team Member written all over it.

  5. If at all possible, avoid referencing TikTok or using any kind of hip phrases like “basic” or “glow-up”. They will think you are relevant to youth and point you in the direction of the Cube.

  6. When you pass by someone, I suggest against uttering the phrase “Good morning!” or else you are going to be standing by a door greeting faster than you can say, “Have a great week!”

  7. If you have been attending our church for some time now and someone happens to approach you with a simple question like “Where is the bathroom?” or “Where is the Children’s Ministry?” You should probably ignore them because if a staff member sees you helping AT ALL...they are going to suggest you work at the information kiosk.

Well, I hope this was helpful. Basically, come in for service, resist any kind of pull on your heart to get involved in any certain way, and go ahead and head out to lunch. The last thing we need are more people who love Jesus serving the church, ya know? (*insert record scratch here*) OKAY OKAY OKAY, I CAN’T DO IT ANYMORE! I can’t keep pretending that serving the church isn’t one of the greatest joys of being in a community of believers! Whew, I made it longer than I thought I would because GOODNESS THAT WAS SO COUNTERINTUITIVE! I love serving at CRBC and want you to join in! Single Mom’s Ministry? They would love to have you! Whiz Kids? It’s incredible! Celebrate Recovery? Do it!

If you have any questions about where would be a great place to plug in, feel free to come see me at the Info Kiosk!
