Book Review on Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full

Have you ever read the title of a book and thought the book was probably written just for you? Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full: Gospel Meditations for Busy Moms by Gloria Furman was that book for me and it did not disappoint.
Gloria repeatedly makes the statement that it is so easy for us to forget “our primary purpose of serving our children by teaching them who God is and how they exist to enjoy Him.” Gloria reminds us that we can so easily forget who God is, who we are, and who our children are when we allow the day to day activities to consume us instead of the eternal life we are promised as believers. Instead of getting caught up in the mundane of dirty diapers, sticky fingers, and dirty laundry, we can take every moment as a call to worship.
Motherhood is a gift from God to make us holy, which means it does not always feel like rainbows and sunshine. We have to know that sometimes we will fall hard and the ever looming “mommy guilt” will seem closer than ever. Gloria reminds us that “mommy guilt” doesn’t stand a chance when compared to Christ’s death on the cross. Jesus was perfection, so we have freedom in our imperfections.
She beautifully points out that the Gospel is real and relevant to our day, every day. No matter how strong, weak, tired, or content we feel at any given moment; the Gospel is relevant! We must first accept God’s grace for ourselves before we can extend His grace to our children. Remember, children are image bearers of God. We should erupt in praise to God that we get the opportunity to serve and love them on this side of Heaven.
If you’re a mom of young kids, this book is for you. It’s worth every limited moment of time you have to yourself. So move the laundry and toys off the couch, re-heat your coffee, and dive in. You won’t regret it.
