It is a big task to put all the things I love about Dr. Kevin Leman’s book, Sheet Music: Uncovering the Secrets of Sexual Intimacy in Marriage, in a short book review. That’s right, I love a book about sex.

This book is something my husband and I will continually read throughout our marriage because having conversations with your spouse about sex can be hard. This book makes it so much easier. We read it about a year and a half after we were married, and it benefited our marriage greatly. It opened the door to talk about the things that made us uncomfortable, to make sure we were on the same page, and ultimately to make our intimacy stronger.

Dr. Leman encourages couples to read his book after they are married and not before, because he does not hold back as he talks about the good, the struggles, and the awkward questions section at the end.

This book is such a great way to get advice, encouragement, and ideas on how to increase the intimacy in your marriage. One of my favorite quotes from it is, “You won’t discover your husband’s or wife’s favorite places to be touched by reading Cosmopolitan or Esquire. You have to talk to each other, specifically about sex—something that surprisingly few couples do.” Helping couples do this is the whole point of Leman’s book.

In this current generation, we are bombarded with sexual images and messages. We get sex advice from the internet or from magazines, tv shows and movies give us unrealistic expectations of it, and we hear about it from digital and media sources all the time. These things won’t necessarily help us when it comes to intimacy with our spouse. Only deep and honest conversations between a husband and wife about sex can help you grow in intimacy together.

If you don’t know where or how to start that conversation, I’ve got a recommendation for you: READ SHEET MUSIC. It will change your marriage for the better. The benefits of reading this book and growing in intimacy with your spouse are boldly summed up in Dr. Leman’s words, “Your marriage will grow stronger than it has ever been. You’ll be better parents, you’ll be more faithful believers, more productive community members—yes, even better people.”
