On Tuesday, August 8th, a lovely thing will be happening for CRBC Women: Jen Wilkin will be the featured speaker at our annual Women’s Ministry Fall Launch! Ever since word got out that one of our nation’s premier Bible teachers is coming to CRBC, I have been asked one question: How did you get Jen Wilkin?
Several months ago, I was dreaming about our annual Fall Launch and wondering what we might do differently this year. I thought about the purpose of our Launch, the placement of it in our ministry year, what our women would be doing before and after it, and what our church was planning for around that time. We generally very purposefully mix up the authors we study with and read throughout the year. However, I realized that without trying to, by the time of our Launch, we would be in the middle of reading and studying a rather extensive amount of work written by Jen Wilkin. Our weekly Bible study women would have just finished two semesters of Jen’s study of Exodus. Our summer book clubs would have followed up by reading her book, Ten Words to Live By, chosen because it was based on an Exodus passage. And at the Launch we would be announcing that our Fall Bible Study would be on Abide, Jen’s study on 1,2, and 3 John - a choice we had previously made because it would be happening at the same time our teaching pastors would be preaching on those very Bible letters this Fall. So, it seemed obvious: Jen Wilkin should come to CRBC.
Now…how does one make that happen? On short notice, with a small budget, in the middle of the work week for what is in all probability the currently most sought after female Bible teacher in our nation. I knew Jen worked on staff full-time at a church and so usually did not accept teaching invitations in the middle of the week. I also knew she was deep in the throws of writing a Bible study on the complicated book of Revelation. I almost talked myself out of issuing the invitation. It really was a ridiculous request. So, I did two things that every good woman knows to do: I talked to God and then I phoned a friend.
Turns out, both of them are pretty connected. I didn’t get Jen Wilkin, they did.
Inviting Jen was a longshot, but I’m hoping inviting you is not. This is a rare opportunity for CRBC Women to not only launch our ministry for the year, but to also hear from Jen. Seats are limited and selling out fast, so get all the details and sign up now at www.councilroadwomen.org/calendar or at the women’s ministry kiosk this Sunday!
