A "Sure" Thing

Editor’s Note: “Catherine Wayne” is a pseudonym for a beloved CRBC missionary serving abroad.

It matters how we’re asked to be a part of something.

There’s a difference between asking someone, “Hey, do you want to go into a packed Nicaraguan jail and share the Gospel?” versus asking, “Hey, did you hear about the informational meeting about the mission trip to Central America?” There’s a difference between asking someone, “Will you put your schedule on hold unexpectedly today, pick up some Braum’s, and sit in a median to eat breakfast with a homeless man?” versus asking, “Have you noticed the homeless people on the drive to church every Sunday?”

It matters how we’re asked. It also matters how we respond. I’m one of those people who says “Sure” to just about any low-stakes offer.

Want to grab some coffee? Sure!

Are you free to visit this meeting? Sure!

Can you help in the nursery once a quarter? Sure!

Will you memorize this verse with me? Sure!

It’s easy to be a Sure Gal when a simple, low commitment offer is being presented. I think God knows this about me too. He’s rarely asked me to do big things or make extravagant moves. He’s asked me things like:

Catherine, will you keep your passport updated?

Have you thought about the gifts I’ve given you?

Hey Catherine, have you considered just submitting your résumé?

Will you shoot her an email to learn more about that opportunity?

Let’s talk through this together. Can we meet a little longer tonight?

The fun thing about constantly having your “sure” in your pocket is that there’s a world of experiences that the Father opens up. Experiences we never even dreamed we would see ourselves live through. And it all started with a simple word:

Sure.

Daniel said “sure” when God called him to pray regularly. David said “sure” when God provided opportunities to practice with his slingshot. Ruth said “sure” when the Father drew her to move with her mother-in-law. There are so many examples throughout history of people offering their “sure” to God.

In this missions season at CRBC when the theme is “Missions Starts with Me,” escape the temptation to be overwhelmed or disqualified by big, heroic callings. Focus on the step right in front of you. What can you prayerfully give your “sure” to today?
