Chances are, you unwrapped a great gift this past Christmas. Maybe it was a new sweater in your favorite color, tickets or a gift certificate to do something you couldn’t justify paying for, a gadget to make your life easier, or maybe something to encourage your latest hobby. But there is a difference between opening a great gift and really receiving it. You have to take care of the sweater and wear it regularly, redeem those tickets, enjoy the benefits of that gift certificate, use the gadget and develop that hobby!

I knew some important things about my husband before we ever went on a date. We had mutual friends, so I heard about their impressions of and interactions with him. I knew about Brian, but I didn’t really know him until we spent a lot of time alone together. I listened to what he said and watched his behavior. Getting to know God has been similar.

Sometimes, what sounds like a good idea is actually divine inspiration. I honestly didn’t want to join our church’s “Read Through the Bible in 1 Year” plan. I prefer reading shorter amounts and spending more time focusing on them, but I wanted to support what the church was doing and I believe in the value of reading through Scripture.

Have you ever tried on a piece of clothing with a tag proclaiming “One Size Fits All,” only to find that you look absolutely ridiculous in it? I usually look like a short and squatty 50-something woman who is 9 months pregnant. Not a good look! Just as “One Size Fits All” doesn’t work with clothing, it doesn’t work with connecting with God either.
