When I reflect on Mother Mary, I immediately am brought to her song of praise located in the Gospel of Luke. Referred to as the Magnificat, this is a beautiful and soulful section of poetry, praise, and remembrance of who God is (Luke 1:46-55). It is laced with many allusions to the Old Testament, speaking to Mary’s own spiritual maturity and relationship with God. Yet, I can only imagine what must have gone through her head as a young teenager being visited by an angel from God. Her humble nature recognizes that she is but a lowly servant for the Lord, and that God’s favor has rested upon her (Luke 1:29-30, 48). Unaware of the fate of her baby boy, Mary seeks for God’s will to be done as it has been said (Luke 1:38). This exalting song to the Lord is the summation of Mary’s character, and brings great glory to God.
Mothers & Others
With Mother’s Day approaching, we thought it would be a good time to remind the women in our lives that we love them. There are many types of mothers- birth mothers, adoptive mothers, step-mothers, grandmothers. Then there are those we refer to as “others.” These women may have stepped into our lives as mentors, friends, colleagues, friends of our mothers, or any “other” way. We all know having a mother or “other” to walk alongside us in life is incredibly important to our earthside journey. Take the time this week to share your appreciation to the mothers & “others” in your life! We went ahead and had a few women share their appreciation in the blog post below about some women in our church! Take a look for some inspiration!
Motherhood: Works in Progress
I imagine the word “Mother” evokes different emotions for all. There may be fond or painful memories attached to the title--a sense of loss, a longing, or even an indifference. I am so fortunate to have an incredible mother who inspires and challenges me to be better and more like Christ by the way she lives and who has also become one of my best friends. I am constantly amazed and humbled by how she still finds ways to serve my sisters and I as we are raising our own families. When we had our family business, she also became a stand-in mother to several of our employees, many of whom were going through major life events or hardships. Years after she is done raising her own children, she still finds ways to be used in that capacity and is beloved by all who know her.
A Mother’s Day Gift: Hope for Moms with Children who have Lost their Way
I have served on the Council Road staff the past six months, and every Monday I sort through the prayer requests from Sunday services to bring to staff meeting where the staff prays. It is a rare week that we don’t get a request from a concerned mother asking for prayer for her struggling child. Some sign their names, others are anonymous…
